I have always been creative. I can’t remember a time in my life that hasn’t involved making art. Sometimes life gets in the way, but I always return to my art. For me, it is meditative and an important way to express myself. I didn’t do any formal training, but I have attended many workshops over the years and experimented with a variety of mediums. Art is about taking risks, challenging yourself, and looking at the world around you with wonder. I feel like I have found my style and freedom in art by letting go of any expectations.
I am drawn to vibrant colour, patterns, texture, and the influence of many cultures and architecture through my travels and a keen interest in the unique art of various cultures. Most of my artworks start off as abstract, and I play with colour blocking, patterns, and collage. This is fun, and I try to just let it flow and play with the paint. I often put them aside at this point, then come back with an idea, or I simply see a shape in what I have created and go with it. Over the years, I have learnt to trust myself with the process.
Three years ago, I moved to Hervey Bay from the Gold Coast to be closer to family and seek a slower pace of life. I packed up my belongings, bought a vintage caravan, learnt to use power tools, and turned it into my tiny home. I am lucky to be situated on my sister’s beautiful farm, looking out over paddocks, and sharing space with three dogs, five pygmy goats and two sheep.
This simpler way of life has allowed more time to create and be inspired. I am fortunate to have a lovely studio space to work from. I display my work regularly at the Pier Markets in Urangan, and I have taken part in various exhibitions in the region. I’m so grateful to all the lovely clients who have taken home one of my artworks, and I now have many repeat clients.
I really enjoy the community connection at the markets, hanging out with other very talented art-makers, and meeting the locals. In today’s world, where everything is online, it is good to just set up my market stall and connect with people.
My newest venture is “Sweet Vintage by Misha”, curating custom wearable clothing made from unique vintage fabrics. This is another way to be creative and focus on repurposing and upcycling. I have had a fantastic response to my new venture and plan to expand it further.
When I am not painting, I am generally off on an adventure somewhere enjoying nature, exploring a trail and camping. This is definitely my happy place. I have found that the change to a more minimal way of living has allowed me to fulfil my passion for producing beautiful art and sharing it.
