By Kate Bentley – Owner of Happy Tails Pet Laundromat

Happy Tails Pet Laundromat started with an exciting idea, but for me it has become about so much more than just washing pet items. The concept is unique, bright, colourful and perfect for Hervey Bay.

My journey has been shaped by life experiences, challenges, determination and a willingness to have a go, even when I haven’t always known exactly how things would turn out. Starting a new business later in life was exciting, but also frightening. There were moments when I questioned myself: Am I doing the right thing? Will people understand the concept? Will customers come? Can I really make this work?

There have been unexpected costs, long days, sleepless nights and plenty of problems to solve. I’ve had to face my fears, trust myself and keep moving forward when it would have been easier to give up. I’ve learnt that you don’t have to be fearless to do something brave; sometimes you just have to take that first step.

I have many years of laundromat industry experience behind me; as a former co-owner and now manager of Laundry4655, I saw a genuine need for a place where people could wash the things that don’t really belong in the family washing machine. Hairy, muddy, sandy, and sometimes incredibly smelly pet items.

Happy Tails was created for animal laundry, but as the weeks have gone by, I’ve realised it’s opened up a whole new market for other items to be washed, such as super-dirty workwear, floor mats, painters’ drop sheets, and camping gear. Anything grubby, bring it in!

Sustainability is also central to the concept. Instead of throwing away a dirty dog bed, blanket or horse rug and replacing it, people can wash it, dry it and use it again. It’s about getting more life from the things we already own and reducing unnecessary waste.

But my favourite part of Happy Tails isn’t the washing machines. It’s the people. I genuinely love meeting people, hearing about their animals, meeting the dogs that come through the door, and simply chatting. I wanted to create somewhere friendly and welcoming, somewhere that feels connected to the community.

Even though the doors have just opened, I plan to further evolve the business with a small cafe, pet bakery, and a shop selling pre-loved and handmade pet items.

When someone tells me I’ve made their life a little easier, I remember exactly why I started. Happy Pets. Happy humans. And one very proud Happy Tails owner.
