Explore. Challenge. Thrive.

There is something powerful about learning beyond the classroom. At St James Lutheran College, students are swapping desks for hiking trails, canoes, mountain bikes and the great outdoors, discovering that some of life’s most valuable lessons are learned through experience.

From aquatic adventurers and exploring our natural environment in Years 9 and 10, through to senior pathways in Sport and Recreation, Aquatic Practices and Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation, students are encouraged to embrace challenge, build resilience and develop confidence in themselves and others.

Whether navigating a bush trail, paddling on local waterways or participating in outdoor challenges, students learn to think critically, work collaboratively and step beyond their comfort zones. Practical experiences in outdoor and aquatic environments help students develop confidence, resilience and important water safety and lifesaving skills relevant to our coastal community.

Outdoor Recreation teacher Lysbeth Corney says the program provides students with opportunities to grow in ways that cannot always be replicated in a traditional classroom.

“Outdoor learning allows students to challenge themselves, develop confidence and build strong connections with their peers and the environment around them. It’s amazing to see students discover what they’re capable of when they step outside their comfort zone.”

At St James, outdoor recreation is about more than adventure. It’s about developing capable, confident young people who are ready to explore opportunities, embrace challenges and thrive in whatever path lies ahead.

That’s an adventure with purpose at St James.
