We live in one of the most beautiful corners of the world, surrounded by a vibrant, bustling Fraser Coast community. Yet, behind closed doors, many of our older neighbours are facing a quiet challenge: deep, persistent loneliness.
Social isolation is an invisible issue, but its impact on health and happiness is very real. That is where you come in. At the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC), we believe that no one in our community should feel forgotten. Through the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS), we are looking for passionate locals who want to turn a spare hour into a lifeline of friendship.
Funded by the Australian Government, the scheme pairs volunteers with older community members who receive government-subsidised residential aged care or Home Care Packages. These are individuals who may not have family nearby or whose social circles have shrunk over time.
Being an ACVVS volunteer isn’t about ticking off chores or medical tasks; it is purely about companionship. It’s about sharing a cup of tea, talking about the footy, playing a game of cards, or simply listening to stories from a life well-lived.
We often think volunteering requires highly specialised skills, but the most valuable thing you can offer is simply yourself.
A regular, one-on-one visit bridges the gap between isolation and belonging. For an older person, knowing that someone is visiting just to see them can completely transform their outlook on life. It reminds them that they are still a valued, heard, and vital part of our community.
And here is the beautiful secret about volunteering: it’s a two-way street. Our volunteers constantly tell us how much joy, wisdom, and laughter they get out of these friendships. You aren’t just giving back; you’re building a genuine, meaningful bond.
We are actively seeking volunteers from all walks of life across the region. Whether you can visit once a week or once a fortnight, your consistency is what matters most. We also warmly welcome volunteers from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds to help us match visitors with residents who share similar life experiences.
If you have a warm heart, a knack for listening, and a little bit of time to spare, you are exactly who we are looking for.
Ready to make a difference right here on the Fraser Coast? Getting started is simple, and our friendly HBNC team will support you every step of the way.
Together, let’s make sure our older generation feels the true warmth of the Fraser Coast community.
