For many people in Hervey Bay, the Rotary Hervey Bay “Z Bus” is far more than a big blue bus parked at Apex Park on Friday and Saturday nights. It is a safe place to sleep, free from judgement, and a reminder that kindness and compassion still matter.
The service began as part of the Sleepbus initiative, created to provide safe overnight accommodation for people experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity or crisis. When Sleepbus collapsed, the future of the Hervey Bay bus became uncertain. Rather than let the service disappear, a determined group of volunteers stepped in to keep it running.
Led by passionate volunteer and President Kelly Thumath, eight original Sleepbus volunteers partnered with the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City. Rotary members, including Gerry Meijer and Roger Skipsey, worked alongside volunteers and supporters to repair, fundraise, register and relaunch the service as the Z Bus, named for the peaceful “Zzzzz” sleep it provides.
The Z Bus does not solve homelessness, nor does it replace long‑term housing or support services. Its purpose is simple but vital: to offer a safe place to sleep on Friday and Saturday nights for people who would otherwise be sleeping rough. Guests have access to warm, safe pods and the chance to rest with dignity. For many, that single night of safety can make a meaningful difference.
The Z Bus is unique in the number of volunteers it requires each night of operation. Each service relies on overnight caretakers, service volunteers, bus drivers, housekeeping volunteers and coordinators – this is in addition to the ongoing need for helpers who support fundraising, maintenance and community events.
Among this dedicated team are Bri and Ian, parents of young volunteer Toby Robinson. All three serve on the committee and often volunteer together. Committee member Carolynne donated $5 from the stained‑glass artwork she sold to support the service. Debbie, also on the committee, works tirelessly on forms, administration and liaison, while remaining a constant and reliable service volunteer. Tarsh, a caretaker and committee member, provides much‑needed comedy relief, regularly entertaining (and occasionally alarming) the team with her DIY antics and sporting injuries.
The Z Bus thanks its volunteers, donors and sponsors for their ongoing support. Donations and sponsorships help cover fuel, maintenance, insurance, bedding and operational costs, allowing the service to continue providing safe sleeps for people doing it tough in the community.
