Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. School has a significant impact not only on a child’s academic performance but also on their social growth, emotional wellbeing, and overall sense of belonging. While school websites and brochures provide useful information, no parent should choose a school without taking time to visit schools and meet with key staff before making that final decision.
A key step is to arrange an appointment with the Principal and, where possible, the teacher or year-level coordinator who is likely to oversee your child’s grade. Conversations with key staff provide an opportunity to ask about the school’s values, expectations, and approach to supporting students, and to determine whether the school’s philosophy aligns with your family values and your child’s individual needs.
Key questions to consider include: behaviour management and student wellbeing, and how the school promotes positive behaviour, responds to bullying, and manages conflicts between students. A strong school will have clear, consistent processes that focus on both accountability and support, rather than just a process of exclusion.
Academic support is another important area to explore. You may wish to consider questions that explore how the school identifies students who need additional assistance or extension opportunities. Questions such as “What interventions are available for students who are falling behind?” and “How are gifted learners challenged?” These can provide valuable insights into the school’s commitment to meeting diverse learning needs.
Equally important are the support systems that promote school engagement and social-emotional wellbeing. Enquire about programs that help students build resilience, develop friendships, and feel connected to the school community. Questions may include: How does the school support students who experience anxiety or social difficulties? What wellbeing programs are available? Whom can students and parents contact if concerns arise? You want to be confident that your school choice creates safe and inclusive learning environments.
During a visit, observe how staff interact with students and how students interact with one another. Look for evidence that students feel safe, that teachers interact genuinely, and that students appear supported and engaged at school.
Also consider finding out how communication between home and school is structured and how involved parents can be in the school community. Schools that maintain strong partnerships with families provide opportunities for a more holistic approach to a child’s school experience.
Ultimately, choosing a school is about finding the best fit for your child. By asking thoughtful questions, meeting with key staff, and examining both academic and wellbeing supports, parents can make an informed decision that promotes their child’s learning, happiness, and long-term development.
