By Warren Thorpe – Director of Grande Designed Homes

If you had asked me years ago where this journey in construction would lead, I don’t think I would have predicted building high-quality homes and renovations in one of Queensland’s most sought-after coastal regions. But looking back now, it feels like a natural progression. Building has never just been about bricks and mortar—it’s about people, lifestyle, and creating something that lasts.

At Grand Designed Homes, that philosophy sits at the centre of everything we do.

Like many in the industry, my path started with hands-on experience—learning the fundamentals, understanding how buildings come together, and developing a deep respect for the craft. Early on, as a qualified Bricklayer & Carpenter, I realised that construction is as much about problem-solving and relationships as it is about technical skill. I had a bit of a “lightbulb moment” at 21 years of age when I decided to build a new home, sell it, and become rich. The build happened with no real issues—that was the easy part. The selling-it-to-become-rich part, well, that’s another story and a very steep learning curve in economics! That experience and foundation shaped how I approach projects today—practical, solutions-focused, and always centred around the client. That mindset has stayed with me throughout my career and continues to influence every project we take on.

Over time, working across both residential and commercial construction gave me a well-rounded perspective. While commercial projects offer pace and variety, residential building brings something different—something more personal. You’re not just delivering a space; you’re creating someone’s home, their investment, and often their future. That responsibility is something we don’t take lightly.

Here on the Fraser Coast, particularly in Hervey Bay, we’re seeing a strong shift in how people think about housing. It’s no longer just about building a house—it’s about building a lifestyle. People are moving here for a reason: the coastal environment, the community, and the opportunity to enjoy a more balanced way of living. That’s exactly what we aim to deliver through every project at Grand Designed Homes.

Our approach is simple: combine thoughtful design, quality construction, and a streamlined process that makes the journey as easy as possible for our clients.

From the very beginning, we focus on understanding what our clients actually want—not just in terms of layout, but how they live day-to-day. Whether it’s a growing family, downsizers looking for low-maintenance living, or investors seeking strong long-term value, every brief is different. That’s where good design comes in.

We work closely with clients through the early stages, taking them on a journey of design discovery and evaluating their options around family living, lifestyle, and concept layouts. We also guide them through selections—often shopping together for the more enjoyable elements like fixtures and fittings—to ensure their home not only looks great but functions seamlessly. That connection matters to us, as the building process should be an enjoyable experience, not a hindrance.

Once the design is locked in, the focus shifts to delivery. One of the biggest challenges in residential construction is managing the process—from approvals and documentation through to build and handover. This is where experience and systems make a real difference. We’ve built our process to be clear, structured, and transparent, ensuring clients feel informed and confident at every stage.

Communication is everything. A well-run project isn’t just about staying on time and on budget—it’s about making sure there are no surprises along the way.

The homes we build reflect a modern Australian coastal style—clean lines, functional layouts, and materials that are both durable and visually appealing. We lean towards neutral palettes, natural textures, and practical finishes that stand the test of time. It’s about creating spaces that feel comfortable, not overcomplicated, while still delivering a high-end result.

What really sets our projects apart, though, is the attention to detail. From cabinetry and storage solutions to outdoor living areas and finishes, we take pride in getting the small things right. These are the elements that clients notice every day once they move in, and they’re often what elevate a home from good to great.

The Fraser Coast itself plays a big role in shaping the type of homes we deliver. With continued population growth, strong demand, and significant infrastructure investment across the region, there’s a clear opportunity for well-designed, high-quality housing. Buyers and investors alike are recognising the value of the area—not just financially, but from a lifestyle perspective.

We’re seeing increasing demand for turnkey house and land packages, particularly for clients who want a straightforward, stress-free path into a new home. These packages allow us to control the design outcome while simplifying the process for the client—something that’s becoming more important in today’s market.

At the same time, custom builds remain a key part of what we do. For clients with specific ideas or unique sites, we enjoy the challenge of bringing those visions to life. Every custom home is an opportunity to create something tailored, functional, and genuinely unique.

Of course, none of this happens without the right team. Construction is a collaborative effort, and we’re fortunate to work with a strong network of local trades, suppliers, and consultants who share the same commitment to quality. From initial concept through to final handover, it’s a team effort—and having the right people involved makes all the difference. Internally, we have a skilled designer, estimation team, project manager, site supervisor, and our carpentry team on-site who bring our clients’ dreams to life. We cannot achieve our level of professionalism without this core team, which I am incredibly grateful for. As the saying goes, “surround yourself with good people”—and there’s never been a truer word spoken.

Looking ahead, the industry will continue to evolve. Materials, building methods, and design expectations are always changing, and staying adaptable is key. But one thing that won’t change is the importance of delivering quality workmanship and a positive client experience.

At the end of the day, what drives us is simple—we enjoy what we do. We take pride in building homes that people are excited to live in, spaces that support their lifestyle, and projects that contribute to the growth of the local community.

For us at Grand Designed Homes, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a project come together from concept to completion—and knowing it will be lived in, enjoyed, and valued for years to come.
