Hervey Bay’s Skye has dedicated her life to looking after others, so an unexpected diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease has transformed her world.

The nurse was informed in late 2025 of her diagnosis and has experienced a rapid decline in function, which has impacted her mobility and ability to work. Skye is now reliant on support from her partner to attend to daily living and has been forced to reduce her working hours to focus on managing her illness.

“Nobody ever thinks they will be diagnosed with a terminal illness, so to be informed that I have been nominated as a recipient of Rally for a Cause was a great relief,” Sky said. “I was aware of the charity and had been involved with a couple of fundraisers prior, but never thought I would be relying on the charity for support.”

Skye’s condition has deteriorated, and she is now reliant on a walking frame to assist with mobility.

“Funds from Rally for a Cause provided me with an electric bed that enables me to be able to elevate, get in and out of bed and sleep without pain. By providing financial assistance, the charity has enabled me to live my best life,” Skye said.

Skye wanted to thank the generous supporters of the charity for helping those in their time of need. “Biggest heartfelt thanks for helping to relieve financial pressure. You’re a wonderful cause, and everyone should get behind you.”

Rally for a Cause was founded 12 years ago and has now raised more than $5m and assisted more than 430 families in their time of need. The charity provides short-term financial relief and other support, including household bills, food vouchers, rent and mortgage, accommodation if families need to travel to Brisbane for medical appointments, medical equipment and, unfortunately, funeral expenses.
