December is here and so is summer and with the new season we will see our summer fishing start to heat up!
Burrum
In the Burrum a few jack continue to caught and December is a great month to target mangrove jacks. Live prawns have been doing the damage along with live mullet. Flathead, bream and whiting have also been reported. Out wider school mackerel can be found on the Burrum 8 Mile along with a few golden trevally.
Wide Grounds
The wide grounds from the Southern Gutters to outside Break Sea Spit has seen captures of coral trout, sweetlip, mahi mahi, wahoo and Spanish mackerel.
Local Reefs
The local reefs have been fishing well for species like cod, blue parrot, sweetlip and blackall. Fresh baits have been the key to success with early morning starts also producing the goods. A few pencil squid have been about so taking a few squid jigs would be a good idea.
Platypus Bay
Tuna can be found in Platypus Bay with zman 5 inch jerkshads and metal slugs getting results. Spotted mackerel are about in small patches out wide with golden trevally found deeper in the ocean.
Sandy Straits
The straits have been producing some nice whiting with the odd flathead also about. Working the flats on the run in tide has been effective on the whiting. In the creeks jacks can be found in the holes along with grunter and the odd salmon. If you are after a feed of mud crabs there has been some decent crabbing of late so taking the pots would be a great idea.
