This month I wish all our readers a blessing-filled and joyous festive season.

The title of our column may sound confusing. I don’t mean that I want to talk about alcoholic Christmas spirits; not that I have anything against a little tipple. However, the spirits I’m referring to are your loved ones, colleagues, treasured animal friends and other characters who have shared your life but are no longer living on Earth. Some might say I’m referring to ‘the dead’, but if you are of similar mind to me, you’ll know that they are very much still alive.

This time of year holds a tough mix of emotions for many of us. While we are grateful for those whom we love and are still with us, at the same time we may feel broken-hearted and lonely because we miss close family and friends who have died. There are many occasions, especially in the first year after a passing, that can trigger the tears and sadness of our loss, and Christmas, is one of these times. If you are feeling like this, my heart goes out to you.

I can only share what has helped me through my own grief. It is my belief that the separation, which can feel so large and long-lasting, is an illusion. Our loved ones live in a dimension where they can still see us, know when we are thinking of them and encourage us. Their presence may be subtly felt as tingles in our energy field and their messages seen in the signs they leave for us to discover.

Perhaps it’s a meaningful numberplate just as you think of your Dad, or your Mum’s favourite song on the car radio. There may be a scent that immerses you in memories of your partner or a small gift from Heaven left for you to find. Don’t be surprised if there is humour in the signs you discover. I’m convinced Spirit love to see us laugh.

Where we gather, our loved ones gather also, feeling joy as we live our best lives, because they want nothing less for us than that. Through continuing our journey and making the most of our experiences, we honour them.

These thoughts comfort and uplift me at Christmas and on the other occasions when sadness seeps into the spaces that absence has left behind. I hope that the belief in eternal life after Earthly passing also comforts you.
