I’m smiling as I write our column this month, as my imagination is in overdrive.

I’m wondering what your wardrobe and clothing drawers look like, and if they resemble mine?

I also wonder if you stand in front of your options each morning and dither about what you feel like wearing, like I do? Perhaps your colour coordinated, neatly organised outfits remove all need for confusion, but, sadly, that’s not the case for me.

I can’t help feeling that the colours I wear need to make a positive contribution to my mood. Some days, I decide bright colours like pink or red offer me just the right energy, while on other days I might choose calming shades of blue and green. Occasionally, a more neutral colour like beige is my choice, if I want to appear composed or blend in with others.

What this means is that my wardrobe looks like a rack of clothing at a colourful bazaar where one thing has no relationship to the next. Hence, my dithering. Even my choice of a tea or coffee cup is influenced by how I feel. Dainty and floral? Stripey and colourful? What feels right, right now?

I apologise if my indecision is making you twitch, but I suspect that our empathic can readers relate to what I’m describing. Empaths are powerfully affected by the vibrations that surround them, and colour is no exception. Colour has the ability to uplift, calm, depress, overstimulate and even confuse us. Have you ever been caught in an environment where too much colour, noise and movement have left you dizzy and disorientated? The lights at side-show alley certainly affect me that way.

I believe its no coincidence that the colours of nature are healing to our mind and spirit. When the artificial world feels overwhelming, I find that simply walking on a beach, drinking in the fragrances of spring or connecting with the blue of the sky soon help me feel better. We instinctively know what we need, and colour is an important aspect of our intuition. Whether it’s the foods we eat, the clothing we wear, the plants we surround ourselves with, the home décor we choose or the highlights with which we accent our hair, colour is an influencer of our wellbeing.

That’s it from me. I’m off to sort out my wardrobe. That’s what I tell myself anyhow.
