Surgeon’s Sea Change Which Advanced Urology Care On The Coast

When Dr Nazim Ahmad chose to call Hervey Bay home 15 years ago, the region had no resident urologist.

It’s a move that’s made a world of difference for patients from across the Fraser Coast.

A highly-skilled urologist with over two decades of experience, Dr Ahmad studied medicine in Pakistan and trained at the internationally recognised Aga Khan University Hospital.

He went on to gain experience at tertiary hospitals in Sydney and Melbourne, before establishing his practice at St Stephen’s Hospital.

“When I moved to Hervey Bay, there was an opportunity to make a real difference,” Dr Ahmad said.
“No longer do residents of Hervey Bay and surrounding areas need to make trips to metropolitan areas for specialist urology,” he said.

Dr Ahmad has performed more than 500 radical prostatectomies locally — a procedure used in the treatment of prostate cancer — and with expertise spanning all areas of urology, provides a wide range of surgical and non-invasive procedures at St Stephen’s.

Emphasising the importance of regular check-ups with a GP, Dr Ahmad said among the conditions he treats, he regularly sees patients for review of elevated PSA levels and those diagnosed with prostate, bladder and renal cancer.

“Living locally means I’m close by which gives patients comfort and confidence,” he said.

“I want people to know that advanced urology care isn’t limited to big cities. Patients don’t need to go elsewhere, we can provide the care they need right here.”

He’s also embraced our coastal lifestyle, friendly community and good connectivity, which Dr Ahmad credits with making the region an ideal place to live and work.

“I enjoy the beaches and climate. It’s also given me a better work-life balance. By spending less time on the road for work, I’m able to spend more time with my wife and two sons.”
