Gemma Lightbody is determined to give back to the very strangers that helped her during the toughest times of her life.

The Torquay resident has been appointed the recipient liaison officer for local charity Rally for a Cause where she works at the front-line of the charity’s work to assist those facing life-limiting medical conditions and other tragic circumstances.

A qualified nurse and former special school teacher’s aide, Gemma is perfectly positioned to help those during these tough times as both she and her daughter are former beneficiaries of the award-winning charity.

In 2020, Gemma and husband Ben had their lives turned upside down when their five-month-old daughter Connie was diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening heart condition.

If Connie’s diagnosis and ongoing medical care wasn’t life-impacting enough for this young family, just six months later Gemma, aged 30, was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer.

Rally for a Cause assisted the family on both occasions by providing short-term financial relief and support to help cover living expenses, medical costs and travel to city hospitals for treatment.

“It is rare that the one family is a double recipient of Rally for a Cause which is why we are so thankful and intent on giving back.

“We are forever grateful for the support we received from the charity and the generous businesses and community members that donate to help those in need.”

When the opportunity arose to work for the charity Gemma realised her personal and professional experience could be helpful to others in need.

“I have experienced what many of the recipients are going through so I feel well positioned to provide that support and guidance where required.

“We will never forget how Rally for a Cause was there for us and what a difference that made to our lives at the time. Now is my chance to give back and repay the love and support we received for those that support the charity.

“I may never get to meet them but that doesn’t mean we are not forever grateful and thankful to the donors and supporters for their generosity and assistance.”

Rally for a Cause has raised more than $4m in the past decade to assist eligible locals facing life-limiting medical diagnosis through short-term financial support.
