This month I’m exploring the idea of surrender and how it can help us cope with the struggles in our lives.

You’ve likely heard the phrase, ‘The Peace of God’. It’s frequently requested as a blessing for congregation members during a religious service. However, what does the Peace of God mean, and is it possible to experience it?

If we are able to believe the near-death evidence from thousands of people throughout the world, it seems that perfect peace is real, because they have experienced it first-hand. A common theme in their testimonies is that during moments of unbearable pain or crisis, a great peace filled them at the exact moment they surrendered their life. It didn’t even matter if the person had no previous interest in spirituality or religion. If a point was reached where they surrendered their life to a higher power because they could no longer withstand their distress, an amazing and beautiful peace filled them, replacing fear with love.

This is reportedly a peace beyond our understanding because we cannot understand or imagine its power or perfection.

I’ve never experienced a crisis in which I was in imminent danger of annihilation; however, I do know what it is like to feel afraid, lost, confused and in pain. I also know what it is like to try to do everything possible to control, help or fix a scary situation, only to realise it is beyond my ability.

In such moments, any person can experience a ‘dark night of the soul’, feeling small, afraid and helpless in an overwhelming world.

It’s during times like these that I am learning to surrender my will, my life, the lives of those I love and my fears to God (the Universe). Once I’ve done my best, I pray from my heart for spiritual assistance, and then I trust that the Divine Plan (God’s will) has everything in hand.

That’s how I find peace – not through continued worrying and planning – but in the conscious decision to surrender to a higher power. What follows feels like a lifting of weight from my chest and a calm feeling spreading throughout my body. It’s not the perfect peace that is described in some of the near-death stories I’ve read, but it’s so much better than the alternative despair or anxiety.

No matter what your views are about faith or the meaning of life, perhaps you might also try handing over control of the reins and asking for spiritual help when you need it? I wish you many blessings as together we navigate our lives in the best way we feel we can. Every breath is a gift and tomorrow holds no promises.
