This year is the 10th Year of the Fraser Coast Dunga Derby will see the teams leaving the Fraser Coast and heading out on a big 5-day camping charity car rally, raising funds for the local charity Rally for a Cause.
The theme of the rally is Coast to Country where the convoy travels out to small country towns to try and leave them just a little better then when we arrived. We consist of 65 teams, 22 official vehicles including our own medics, tow trucks and our beloved mechanics, who keep the wheels turning and motors running on our ‘Dunga’s.
The adventure consists of travelling to unknown destinations, you read correctly! The teams have no idea where they are going each day. They are handed route notes in the morning and then again at lunch time. They follow their notes which indicate an odometer reading (which they use an app to map their kms) and then are only given the street name or road to turn onto. This is where our official pace car ‘The Road Hog’ stays at the front to keep the convoy moving and our Sweep makes sure no ‘dunga’ is left behind.
We try and find roads off the normal bitumen track and take the convoy through dirt roads, private properties and national parks. The scenery through the countryside is breathtaking. The Dungarians love pushing their cars through some challenging terrain and their favourite is the water crossings.
Upon arriving to their country camp, they unload and set up swags for a night under the stars. Depending on where we are staying, we either have dinner at our camp site around fires or descend on a little country pub. We then wake up before the sun to pack up camp and be on the road again in the morning, to do it all over again.
The Dunga Derby car rally is all things comradery, camping and country, while making a difference to the lives of the recipients of Rally for a Cause who are experiencing life limiting medical conditions in need of financial and/or practical assistance.
