If you’re looking for a fitness activity that goes beyond treadmills and gym walls, dragon boating might be your new favourite way to stay active. This fast‑growing sport blends full‑body conditioning with teamwork, fresh air and a strong sense of community.
The Hervey Bay Dragon Boat Club has been part of the local landscape since 2009. Members range from juniors to paddlers in their 80s, proving that dragon boating truly is a sport for all ages and abilities. Whether you’re chasing competition or simply want a fun, social way to stay fit, there’s a seat in the boat for you.
From a fitness perspective, dragon boating delivers impressive results. Paddling works the shoulders, back, arms, core and legs, offering a low‑impact, high‑intensity workout that builds strength and cardiovascular endurance. Because each paddler works at their own pace, beginners can ease into training while experienced athletes push themselves harder. The rhythmic motion of paddling also improves coordination, balance and flexibility, making it a well‑rounded workout for the whole body.
But the benefits extend far beyond physical fitness. Dragon boating is a team sport built on timing, trust and connection. Every stroke contributes to the boat’s momentum, creating a strong sense of unity. Many members say the friendships they’ve formed are just as rewarding as the fitness gains. Social events, regattas, travel opportunities and post‑paddle coffees all contribute to a vibrant club culture.
The mental health benefits are equally significant. Exercising outdoors on the water helps reduce stress and boost overall wellbeing. Being part of a supportive community adds motivation and a sense of belonging—something many people miss in solo workouts.
If you’ve ever watched a dragon boat glide across the bay and wondered what it feels like to be part of the crew, now is the perfect time to find out. The Hervey Bay Dragon Boat Club is hosting a Come and Try Day on Saturday, September 12, from 10am to 2pm, where locals can meet members, learn the basics and jump into a paddling session. No experience is needed—just enthusiasm and a willingness to give it a go.
The club trains from its base in Urangan Marina, through the large gate to the right of the Boat Club. New members are welcome year‑round.
