How We Lived, Ate and Thrived and What We’ve Forgotten

Before calorie apps, step counters, and sleepless scrolling, humans lived naturally. Life revolved around food, movement, community and rest- not stress and schedules.

Nutrition was simple and seasonal. People ate what the land provided or what they grew in their back gardens: whole, unprocessed, nutrient-dense foods. Here in Australia, native foods were powerhouses, not trends. Think kangaroo (lean, high-protein), warrigal greens (iron and antioxidants), macadamias (healthy fats), finger lime (vitamin C and gut-friendly fibre), bush tomatoes and lemon myrtle. Food wasn’t emotional. It was fuel, connection and survival.

Movement wasn’t a workout -it was life. Walking, carrying, squatting, and climbing. Functional movement all day, not 30 minutes followed by 10 hours sitting. Bodies were designed to move often, not intensely and briefly.

Mindset was community-focused. Identity came from belonging, contribution and purpose, not productivity or perfection. Comparison didn’t exist- because there was no highlight reel to scroll through.

Stress existed, but it was short-lived. A threat appeared, action was taken, and the stress response switched off. Today, our nervous systems are stuck “on” thanks to emails, news, deadlines and constant stimulation.

Sleep followed nature. Darkness meant rest. Light meant activity. No blue light, no doom-scrolling at 10pm, no pretending 5 hours is enough. Sleep was sacred -not optional.

Modern life has stripped us of these rhythms. Reconnecting doesn’t mean living in the bush, it means eating real food, moving daily, calming the nervous system, prioritising sleep and remembering we’re human first.

Native living isn’t backwards.
It’s biological common sense.
